Specimen Requirements

"DIRTY" COLLECTION

1.  The patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hr prior to collection and should have not cleansed the genital area or tip of penis.

2.  Collect the first 20-50 mL of voided urine (the first part of the stream-not midstream) into a plain, sterile urine collection cup. 

Note:  60 mL, white-cap collection cups are available from the laboratory.

3.  Cap tightly and label with patient identification and date/time collected.

4.  Transport to laboratory within 4 hrs. of collection, otherwise keep refrigerated for up to 72hrs. 

Note:  urines <20 mL and >50 mL will be rejected.
