Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Mint-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instruction: 

1. A 12 to 14 hour fast is recommended for accurate results.

2. Eating affects results. Indicate patient’s fasting status on requisition.

3. Label specimen as plasma.

4. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia.

 

Acceptable:

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Serum gel or red top

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instruction:

Cholesterol:

120-200 mg/dL

 

HDL:

Heightened risk: <40 mg/dL

Medium risk: 40-60 mg/dL

Protection probable: >60 mg/dL

 

Cholesterol/HDL Ratio (Calculated):

0-5

 

Triglyceride: 

50-150 mg/dL

 

LDL (Calculated):

70-129 mg/dL


VLDL (Calculated):

20-42 mg/dL
