Specimen Requirements and Processing

Specimen collection: CSF

Container(s): Sterile, screw-capped transport tube or CSF tube

Preferred volume to collect: 1.0 mL

Minimum volume to collect: 0.5 mL

Neonate volume to collect: 0.5 mL

Collection instructions:

  • Label container with patient information, specimen source, and date of collection.
  • Maintan sterility
  • Send to lab immediately for specimen processing

Reference Values

Negative: <300 copies/mL

Positive results are reported as Herpes simplex type 1 DNA detected or Herpes simplex type 2 DNA detected.

Specimen Stability

CSF: Specimen should be refrigerated and received within 24 hours of collection

Laboratory Retention: Extracted viral nucleic acids retained 1 month.
