Specimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection.
Specimen Type: Conjunctiva
Container/Tube: ESwab Collection and Transport System.
Specimen Volume: Adequate amount

1. Swab infected eye with an ESwab.
2. Transport to the lab within 24 hrs.

1. Obtain the specimen by passing the top of a sterile swab approximately 1 inch into anal canal and moving it side to side to obtain material from the crypts.
2. The swab should be free of fecal comtamination.
3. Transport to the lab within 24 hrs.

Collection Instructions:

1. Instruct the patient to take a deep breath and open wide, gently depress the tongue with a tongue blade.
2. The swab is then extended between the tonsillar pillars, behind the uvula, and/or other areas of concern.
3. Take care not to touch the buccal cavity.
4. Saying “Ah” helps raise the uvula and aids in reducing the gag reflex.
5. The swab is swept back and forth across the posterior pharynx to obtain adequate sample.
6. Transport to the lab within 24 hrs.

Reference Values
Negative for Neisseria gonorrhea.
If positive, results are reported to the Health Department.
