Performing Laboratory

North Ottawa Community Hospital

Specimen Requirements

Have patient report to North Ottawa Community Hospital Laboratory. If that is not possible, collect the following:

 

Whole blood and peripheral smears are required.

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood
Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 5 mL

Collection Instructions: Send blood in original tube.

 

Specimen Type: Peripheral blood smear

Container/Tube: Slides

Specimen Volume: 4 slides

Collection Instructions:

1. Using a lead pencil, label frosted end of 4 glass slides with patient’s name.
2. Prepare 4 well-made, thin, peripheral blood smears.

3. Place slides in a transport container.

4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and time of collection, and type of specimen.

Reference Values

An interpretive report will be provided.
